Laverne Jones
Vernon works as the head coach for Goddard High School cross country teams; Volunteers with the Recreation Department’s Summer Fun and Fitness Program exercise leader; Runner’s Club member; works with the Schools with the “bring up grades” program for the elementary schools.

Community Leader with Kiwanis, Keep Roswell Beautiful and Board Member of the New Mexico Senior Olympics and every winter sports a full moustache and beard to serve as Santa for the charitable organizations in Roswell.

In 2006 Vernon was selected as the “Character Counts! Coach of the Year” and featured in the local newspaper for his community involvement.

Seniors recognize Vernon’s dedication to running and works tirelessly to pass his love for running and fitness on to the next generation. Vernon was quoted as saying what makes him do so much running, “I tell them running is the only sport I know where I can run in my underwear and people clap for you and give you water and when you get to the finish line they give you a medal.”

Laverne is 84 years of age. A kind person who knows no stranger, Laverne lives life to its fullest with her great sense of humor. She is a loving grandmother who was called to be the “mother” for three homeless grandchildren after the tragic loss of her son and daughter-in-law.

Laverne also cared for her loving husband through his extended illness. Prior to his death, she was given the following instructions, “Cookie, buy you a new car, watch your money, and have fun!”

Heeding his last instructions to her, Laverne is an active member of the Presbyterian Church for the mission of women in her community and is a Senior Olympic Athlete in Air Gun, Bowling, Dance, Horseshoes, Shuffleboard, Swimming and Table Tennis. She participates all these activities in spite of having triple bypass surgery in 2005.

Laverne is nominated by Larry Bomberger, San Juan County Senior Advisory Board for her tremendous contributions to the San Juan County Senior Community as both a competitor and volunteer. She serves as vice president for Northwest New Mexico Seniors, Inc. and recruits others with her fun-loving and vibrant attitude.
