Senior Olympians Share Their Athletic Expertise with
Local High School Cross Country Teams

  Three dedicated Senior
Olympians, helped save, rebuild, and develop three Chaves Co. High School Cross Country programs. In 1998 Goddard High School’s Cross Country coach left to pursue other endeavors. The Principal of GHS asked Roswell Runners Club member,
Dwain Brown to help coach the students and run home meets until a
coach was found. Dwain Brown approached Vernon Dyer, dedicated runner, Senior Olympic Athlete and member of the NMSO State Board of Directors to assist him as a volunteer.
As of this printing, GHS has been unable to find a coach so Vernon and Dwain have continued to volunteer their time after work to coach both the boys and girls cross country program. Without their dedication, GHS would have to drop Cross Country. Three years later, Vernon not only continues to volunteer his time to assist in coaching these young athletes, but continues to serve as a healthy role model by excelling in Senior Olympics as Race Walker and as a Triathlete competitor.
Dennis Pabst, another Senior Olympic runner, used to work out with GHS’s cross country runners as part of his personal training program. Dennis, a Middle School teacher with natural leadership skills and a love of running, envisioned Dexter High also having
a Cross Country program.

After assessing student
interest, Dennis began building this small program from scratch 3 years ago. Another great role model for life long fitness, Dennis stays active by training
for and participating in Senior Olympic Cycling, Running, Volleyball, and Triathlon events.
Jack Batson, Senior Olympic Tennis competitor, is a retired Roswell High School educator. However, Jack has been anything but retired. Besides conducting Senior Olympic Racewalk Clinics for NMSO Sports Clinics, he teaches Home School P.E., works as a volleyball line judge, and times local community running races. Jack also
devotes much of his time to lead and conduct the cross country program at
his old alma mater RHS, and lend his efforts to help rebuild the program in District 3-4A.
These three dedicated men; Vernon Dyer, Dennis Pabst, and Jack Batson, donate over 150 hours each to these High School runners every season. Hats off to these amazing individuals. High School Cross Country in Southeastern New Mexico
is going strong thanks in part to these Senior Olympic Athletes.
