State Game Incidents Remind Us About Preventative Measures

The Senior Olympic State Game Local Planning Committee and NMSO work hard to ensure the safety of our athletes, spectators, coordinators, and volunteers. However, sometimes accidents and incidents do occur during an event even with the best of precautions.

Below is a rundown of incidents that occurred at the 2002 State Games and what can be done in the future to prevent them.

1 Two athletes fell on the steps at Garcia Hall dormitory. One had a small bump on the head the other broke her ankle.

Future prevention: Stay alert in unfamiliar surroundings! The step down was less than three inches; just enough to throw one off balance. It was properly marked and one fall took place in broad daylight. The other after dark when the Power shortage reset the automatic timers and the lights did not come on at dusk.

2 An athlete twisted their ankle while throwing the javelin.

Future prevention: Practice! Practice! Practice! In any sport you should always wear the proper shoes and brace support if needed. Make sure throwing runway is clear of any rocks or other debris. Stretch, warm up and use proper run up technique when competing. Do strengthening exercises for the lower legs such as toe raises.

3 There were three reports of athletes feeling dizzy and faint; one lady during shuffleboard, two gentlemen at track. Two were taken to the Emergency Room. Both came back to finish competing.

Future prevention: With the excitement and stress of the Games allow enough time for resting, and drink your water! Dehydration can happen anywhere and contributes to existing problems. Make sure you are well hydrated before and during competition. Make sure you get clearance from a doctor to compete in an athletic competition and take your medications on time! Talk to your doctor about your increased activity and possible drug interactions, especially if you are considering taking a non-prescribed medication.

4 One of the gentlemen at Garcia Hall reported a bug bite on his leg. He had a moderate reaction and was taken to the Emergency Room.

Future prevention: The University has a strict regimen of pest control and completely cleans and vacuums the rooms before we arrive; however, lots of recent rain brought out all kinds of "wildlife." It could also mean that Suzy the Friendly Spider might follow you to the games in that old suitcase you keep stored in the garage! Be aware of items you use only once or twice a year. Clean them well before using and be aware of any potential hitchhikers that may decide to follow you to the Games. Take a good look around when you check in; closets, drawers, and bedding.

We are happy to report that all our folks are doing well and our injured ankle will soon be mended.
