TESA Program Presentation OCTOBER 25, 2002 — BELEN, NEW MEXICO T his event was done in conjunction with TESA, Training and Encouraging Senior Activity Program. This program has been developed under the guidance of NSGA and AAALF, American Association for Active Lifestyles & Fitness. Currently under the direction of Mary Visser, PhD , Minnesota State University, Department of Human Performance, Mankato, MN. This was their first formal presentation following two pilots conducted in the Minnesota area.Several Game Sites were able to send seniors. Fifty five seniors, retired and professional, were taken step-by-step through: • Goal Setting—an exercise in visualization techniques• Documentation—records-keeping to determine goal progress• Motivation—documentation of goals• Understanding of Elements of Health—Heart, Muscle, and Nutrition• Multiple Activities—Everyday needs for independence, balance and strength• Testing the Digital Walker, using a Thera-Band, and an exercise videoThe TESA group likened the process to "finding the on-ramp to the Healthy Living Highway." The participant group was cooperative, enthusiastic, and completely engaged in the activities. Many stated they were excited about taking the video back home to share with the senior programs and make it available to others. Several stated that the program was simple and made a great deal of "sense."
Food and refreshments were served by the Valencia Co. Older American’s Center. Director Mary Ann Gonzales, NMSO AmeriCorps*VISTA, Jackie Lewis, and their group of volunteers did a wonderful job. They assisted with planning, set up and clean up, sound system and registration. Also Attending were NMSO Board Chair, June Decker, Board members, Kathy Black, Pete Salazar, Bill Mitchell, and Member Emeritus, Ernesto Ramos. Lots of ideas were shared on how to promote the program with a model for New Mexico. Dr. Visser and her staff were very encouraging and supportive. The last segment of the program centered around PALS—Partners for Active Lifestyles. This was a group of Volunteers who wanted to learn more about training and supporting people who are just beginning a regular exercise routine. .
