New Mexico Senior Olympics partners with Alamogordo Community

ast November 16, New Mexico Senior Olympics and the Alamogordo Senior Center partnered with Alamogordo Daily News to bring a day of health screening, guest speakers, exhibitors, exercise demonstrations, and fun physical activities to the local community. Over one hundred and fifty Otero County residents, most of them seniors, took time out of their busy Saturday to attend the Body Awareness Health and Fitness Fair in Alamogordo.The highlight was speaker Mike Nelson of Alamo Physical Therapy who talked about the "weekend warrior"; sports injuries, and consistent exercise to prevent sport injuries. This health fair was a first for the organizers in Alamogordo, and they anticipate making it an annual event. Health and fitness professionals from the area offered hearing and vision tests, blood pressure checks, glucose screening, and early childhood health screening. The exhibitors had plenty of giveaways and door prizes.
New Mexico Senior Olympics was very visible throughout the day involving senior adults in a fitness walk, chair exercises, and offering seniors an opportunity to test their hamstring and lower back flexibility, balance, and body mass. NMSO also offered frisbee accuracy toss and fun events.
The Local Alamogordo Senior Olympics not only showcased their senior athlete Line Dance talent, but drew a big crowd of participants moving to some fancy line dance instruction. The senior center demonstrated many of the exercises offered in Senior classes throughout the year and provided information on how to sign up for these sessions. Both NMSO and Locals offered Senior Olympic information and how to go about signing up in Otero County. Finally, the NMSO sponsored healthy refreshment break was a hit!
