Nationals Update

NMSO Attends Annual Membership Meeting in Virginia

Nationals offers a dancing vacation!

Line Dance will be non competitive and consists of two days of workshops for beginners, intermediate and instructors levels, concerts and two evenings of dancing the night away. The cost is $115 and includes the $25 NSGA memberships fee. This fee entitles participants to two concerts, access to all Olympic Games and the Celebration of Athletes. The Virginia area will also be celebrating Elvis Week at this time. The deadline for the Line Dance Workshop registration is May 30, 2003. Bring your spouse for only $25 more. A one day pass can also be purchased for $75.

The Local Planning Committee has lots of fun things planned for the National Athletes.

In February Ceci Acosta, Director of NMSO, and June Decker, the Chair of NMSO’s Board of Directors, attended the NSGA Annual meeting in Virginia.

Ceci learned that a special Line Dance Workshop had been added to the Games Schedule as well as the extension of the registration deadline to February 28th.

Discussion during the meeting included ideas and options to increase revenues and athlete numbers.

Discussed, but not adopted this year, was a suggestion that Bronze medalists have an opportunity to attend the games. This has long been the desire of many of our NMSO athletes but most National members felt it was too short a notice for this year and would be unfair to the athletes. Another idea to increase revenue for NSGA was to create a requirement that all participating athletes in Local and State level Games that are sanctioned by the NSGA be required to buy a membership for $15. This would be in addition to any fees charged for local or state games. This was extremely unpopular and was not accepted by the voting membership. Most state coordinators, including New Mexico, felt the dues they currently pay to the NSGA are more than sufficient and the athlete, especially those at the local level should not be charged any additional fees.

City Securities representative, Patrick O’Conner, presented a very affordable liability insurance plan. All the 31 New Mexico Games Sites were mailed copies. This plan offered affordable liability insurance of $1.49 per athlete with no minimum premium. The plan included general liability, participant accident insurance, non profit organization "Director and Officer" liability, crime insurance, and nonowned and hired automobile liability. Local Board members are encouraged to contact their Local Coordinator for more details, or call the State Office at 623-5777. This is excellent insurance and should be taken under serious consideration.

June and Ceci were able to see the Nationals venues of competition. Many are quite far apart. If athletes have more than one sport to compete in it will be crucial they plan well. She strongly recommended athletes get good maps and allow extra time to travel in city traffic.

The venues on the Naval Bases were adequate but "military," whereas the Community Parks and the University venues were fairly new and very attractive. Many of the events and functions are near major hotels. This will make it more convenient for those who stay near their venues or favorite activities. If you haven’t made your travel plans yet, be sure to call Anthony Travel at 1 (800) 736-6377. They have all the details on where to stay to be close to your event.

National Group Travel is Ready to Roll

On Sunday, May 25th, the journey begins. New Mexico Seniors will leave Albuquerque Airport at 7AM and arrive in VA about 5:30pm EST. They and their families will join NMSO in the first of three National Travel Groups and will take to the skies on their way to Hampton Roads, VA. Over 50 nationally qualified athletes from all over the state will join one of three groups and travel together to the 2003 National Senior Games. After arriving in Virginia, NMSO has arranged for them to stay at the Radisson in Norfolk. As part of the group travel package, NMSO has organized shuttles to take the Travel Group Athletes to and from their sport venues.

Over 250 New Mexico Seniors have confirmed they will be going to the National Games. Part of the festivities include the State Reception which will be held Saturday evening on the 31st of May at the Raddison in Norfolk. You will need to get tickets if you plan to attend. The cost is $5.00 for Athletes and $10.00 for guests. Send your reservation request and payment to NMSO before April 25th, 2003. The reception begins at 6:00pm and there will be lots of food and a live band for dancing until 10:00pm that evening. Uniforms for those who ordered them will be available first in Albuquerque on April 29th. If you are not able to pick up your uniform in Albuquerque, it will be mailed to your coordinator. NMSO will mail out final details to all athletes who will be receiving reception tickets, uniforms or traveling with the group.

Due to cancelations, NMSO does have openings for Flight A:
leaving May 25th and returning June 2 and on Flight C: leaving
May 27th and returning June 2. If you are interested, please
call NMSO before Thursday, April 24 for further details.
