New Mexico Senior Olympians Return from
2003 Summer National Senior Games
and Bring Home the Gold!

New Mexico Senior Olympics recently had 265 Senior Adults compete at the 2003 Summer National Senior Games-Senior Olympics. Games were held May 26–June 9th in Hampton Roads, Virginia.

NMSO organized travel plans for 56 Senior Athletes to the Games and provided Game van shuttles to the sport venues in the Norfolk region. Venues were located in Virginia Beach, Newport News, Little Creek Naval Amphibious Base and Norfolk. The athletes in the Group competed in Horseshoes, Shuffleboard, Archery, Bowling, Road Race, Triathlon, Track , Field and Softball.

The New Mexico Group learned on Day 3 of our first gold medals won by our Horseshoe ladies; Doris Miller from Deming, 65-69 age group, and Emilia Maes, of Belen; 85-89 age group.

Senior Athletes competed with ease knowing they would leave the driving to someone else and were able to concentrate on competing and doing their best. Competition at the 2003 Summer National Senior Olympics attracted 10,800 participants, 18 sports were featured during the Games.

New Mexico athletes fared very well winning 22 Gold Medals, 25 Silver and 17 Bronze and 54 ribbons so far, according to preliminary results. Winners by community are: Albuquerque with 22 medals, Santa Fe 9, Los Alamos 7, Torrance Co. 6, Chaves Co. 5, Valencia Co. 3, Sandoval Co. 3, Catron Co. 2, and for Lincoln, Luna, Laguna, Las Cruces, Las Vegas and Rio Arriba one medal each.

Other highlights at the Games were the Celebration of Athletes withe featured speaker, Lynn Swann, Chairman of the President’s Council on Physical Fitness and Sports (PCPFS), entertainment from the Air Force Heritage Brass Quintet, Sky Riders acrobatic trampoline team, Virginia Children’s Chorus and the American Originals Fife and Drum Corps.

New Mexico Senior Olympics qualifies senior athletes every other year to compete in the Summer National Senior Games. NMSO conducts Senior Olympics Games in 26 different sports for men and women in five year age divisions beginning at age 50. The 2003 New Mexico Senior Olympic State Games will be the 25th Annual Summer Games and will be held August 6-10 in Las Cruces.

The 2004 New Mexico Summer Senior Olympic Games will qualify athletes for the 2005 National Senior Games to be held in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania June 3-18, 2005.
