What’s Happening at NMSO?

Seniors Go To Nationals

The NMSO arranged for three National Travel Groups to fly to Virginia for the National Games in Hamton Roads. Ceci, Mandy, and many of the Board of Directors assisted the National Travel Group with their transportation. Some of these were Dick Griffith, June Decker, Dorie Sandoval, Pete Salazar and Vernon Dyer. Between the New Mexico reception party at the Radisson, Opening Ceremonies entertainment and all the sites in the Virginia Area, it’s a wonder anybody made it out to the venues, but they did! 22 Gold Medals so far!

As always the bright red and golden yellow uniforms made a stunning impact at Opening Ceremonies. If you don’t know how to get a National Uniform, talk to your local coordinator. NMSO takes orders for every Nationals Competition. First-time athletes get a special discount of $50.00 for the hat, T-shirt, shorts, jacket and pants. The jacket and pants regularly sell for $80.00 as a set, and the hat, shorts and T-shirt can be purchased separately in the Spring of 2005. If you are a first-time national athlete and did not get a uniform, or perhaps you ordered one and did not get to go, don’t worry. If you are eligible, you may order again the next time you qualify for Nationals 2005.

The best part about the trip for those in the travel group was the wonderful shuttle NMSO was able to provide. Because of scheduling logistics this could only be offered to those in the group. We had three groups fly out during the two week period and our travel flights were not able to meet everyone’s needs. But if you can work it out next time it is a life saver. Ask the people who had to travel all over a five city area just to check in! Ceci Acosta, NMSO Director, frequently reminded the Pittsburgh planning delegation for the 2005 Games the one most important thing they could provide was dependable transportation.

Other happenings at NMSO include the publication of an Events Manager Hand Book with all the important aspects of planning and conducting events. The books were met with loads of praise. Mandy plans to put together a training manual for VISTA’s as her next big project; that is, after the State Games!

REMEMBER: The State Office is moving to the NMSU campus in July. On Monday, July 21 you can reach us in Corbett Center, Room 248, Level II, or call 646-3897, Fax 646-3899.

New VISTAs on Board!

The New Mexico Senior Olympics would like to welcome Rachel Gutierrez of Clovis and Carlos (Charles) Landavazo of Gallup. For the next year the two volunteers will be serving the New Mexico senior population as health promotion advocates.

Rachel has already served one term as a VISTA and was instrumental in the success of the local Clovis Games in 2002. She has already assisted in insuring the popularity of the latest Trek to Healthy Fitness for those seniors in the Clovis area.

Charles is a senior citizen and has been serving the Gallup area for the last several years as a volunteer at the senior center. He is an athlete and provided assistance in the shuffleboard demonstrations at the All Native American Games in Gallup in March of this year.

Rachel and Charles are both enthusiastic concerning their roles as VISTAs, and we are enthusiastic about having them on board. Welcome, Charles and Rachel.
