Record-Setting Senior Olympians in Valencia County
V alencia County submitted a recent
media release about their local athletes:
Their “Rookie” Colleen Wallace, age 51, not only won three
Gold medals but set state records for the Javelin with a distance of 64'
1.5" and Shot Put distance of 31' 11". Her Discus throw of 70'6" also won
her a first place medal.
First timer Colleen states, “At first, I was hesitant to
participate in Senior Olympics. However, Joe Padilla is a strong supporter
of the events and encouraged me.Joe can be seen anywhere and everywhere
urging seniors to participate. It was fun, challenging, and hard work.
Hard work paid off. I was able to accomplish 2 of my 3 goals (my goals
were to set three new State Records for New Mexico, but I fell short in
the discus by 3.5 inches). Missing my goal only increased my determination
to go back and claim it next year. It was through the selfless coaching
and encouragement of Joe Padilla, David Chavez and Floyd Riddle that I was
able to accomplish my goals.”
She further states, “This story is not even about me. The
story is about those participants 50 and older that have a mutual desire
to work and play hard in order to achieve a personal goal they have made
for themselves. Individuals that have a common desire to get out there and
feel alive! Be it the gold, silver, bronze, or ribbons, each participant
seems to be thirsting for a challenge in life! A desire to go that extra
mile! They love to socialize and make lifelong friends they see each year
at the State Games. Some do it for exercise. Some do it to keep their
bodies healthy, both mentally and physically.”
Other Medal and ribbon winning Olympians from Valencia
County in the News included Joe Padilla, Jerry Olguin, Kathy Black, Helen
Abeyta, Eddie Abeyta, Pauline Acoya, Laura Antonio, Randy Aragon, Anthony
Baca, Douglas Black, Nick Blea, and Paul Boos.
