New Mexico Senior Olympics, Inc. Spring 2005

New Format for

Each Year New Mexico Senior Olympics works hard to bring Health and Fitness information and activities to adults over 50. More and more people are looking for answers to their health questions. The Senior Trek to Healthy Fitness is a free, fun, and friendly way to find those answers. Join us to learn about health, nutrition, pain reduction, and better sleep. Find out how to be healthier and have fun at the same time.

This 2005 season the Trek format has been modified. The new shorter format incorporates refreshments, workshops on health and fitness topics, free health screening, and hands-on Sport Clinics. The Fun Fitness walk has become a standard feature and teaches participants how to set goals and start their own program. New this year is the Senior Olympic Idea Exchange where Olympians discuss ideas for improving the local organization and interested seniors can find out about Senior Olympics in their area.

The Roswell and Bernalillo events held in November and December offered several workshops each hour in conjunction with sport instruction. Roswell featured Race Walk with Ernest Espedal, and Gladie Peltomaki taught Shuffleboard in Bernalillo. Doctors and health professionals in sports, nutrition, physical therapy, balance and internal medicine conducted high quality workshops. Seniors only complained that they were not able to go to all the workshops.

THANK YOU –

New Mexico Senior Olympics is fortunate to work with wonderful local community health professionals, volunteers, hospitals, programs and facilities that support seniors. Our many thanks go out to all the groups and individuals that make these events a reality.

On February 17th the next TREK will be held in Las Cruces and Table Tennis will be the featured Sport Clinic. Workshops will be offered on foot care, fitness basics, and fitness safety as well as the Health screening, Fun Fitness Walk, Sports Clinic and Senior Olympic Information and Idea Exchange.

On March 16th – All Indian Game Day a special Trek event is held for Native Americans around the state and will be our Third Annual All Indian Game Day. This event is designed to reach active and less active elders and allow them to experience Senior Olympic sports competition in community groups. Our special thanks go out to the Sandia Wellness program and the Pueblo of Sandia who are hosting the event in 2005 and the Diabetes Prevention Program and many Senior Program staff members who are instrumental in planning and supporting the event.

Something Special: New Mexico Senior Olympics is proud to announce that the Department of Health-Injury Prevention Division will be partnering with us for Special workshops for April and May. These will feature activities on improving balance and fall prevention in addition to our regular schedule.
